So there was a lot of buzz about Anza-Borrego in the media due to the Super Bloom, I had never been before so I just had to go check it out and I’m glad I did!  There was a lot of unique and beautiful scenery, I mean how often do you see normally desert areas covered with green plants and colorful flowers?  It was surreal!

What is the Super Bloom?

A super bloom is a term used to describe an explosion of wildflowers that exceeds the typical spring blooms.  Annuals (flowers) are often short-lived due to the harsh desert conditions, so the seeds lie dormant and only sprout when water washes the protective coating away from their seeds.  Since Southern California has gotten so much rain this winter, the super bloom is expected to be the best it’s been in over a decade!

The Drive

Honestly, the drive there was one of the best parts.  It was neat to see normally rocky or sandy areas covered with green plants, it was like the land before time or something.  There were a lot of neat areas along the way with desert plants that look like underwater coral, giant boulders, and plenty of flowers.

The “Super Bloom”

With all the hype, I thought I was going to see a sea of bright colorful flowers but the truth is a lot of the flowers were really spread out so you had to really look for areas where the flowers were more concentrated if you were looking forward to getting that great super bloom selfie that you’ve been seeing all over the web.  There was a lot of bare patches of dried mud amongst the flowers but if you got the picture from a certain angle, it just looks like you are in a sea of flowers and it looks almost unreal.  There were a lot of yellow and orange flowers when we went, we were hoping to see other colored flowers like purple and red but I was told that the flowers all bloom at different time so it’s possible that the other colors hadn’t bloomed yet.

Road Trip Fun

I love road trips; nothing beats exploring new places, checking out new scenery, and listing to good music and having great conversations!  All in all, I had a really great time, it was relatively close (~2 hour drive), I got some fun pictures out of it, I got to road trip with my honey, and felt like I was in a scene from the Land Before Time during certain parts of the drive, what’s not to love?!
